Abstract Forms
Paper clay is clay that is mixed with shredded paper or other fibres. These fibres create a very strong and versatile clay that is also lightweight. Nearly every time I went back home to Kenya I brought back all manner of objects that reminded me of home, such as the fruit of the baobab tree and pieces of bark that our Cycad or cycas tree had shed. With porcelain paper clay I use the fruit of the baobab tree to mould the form. The bark of the Cycad tree becomes maleable when thoroughly wet and any form can be made and all manner of textures imprinted in them. In the bark forms I imprinted partridge feathers and the result was a delicate form which could be used as a sculptural piece or one that can serve as a serving dish.
